Fiberglass Engineering, was founded by Howard Carstens in Wyoming, Minnesota in 1973.  The company expanded in 1976 with a second manufacturing facility in Melrose, Minnesota.  A year later the two facilities were combined and all offices and manufacturing were moved to the Melrose facility.  In 1978 the name was changed to Carstens Industries, Inc.

James Carstens, Howard Carstens' son, became manager in September, 1997.  Howard retired in 1999 and sold the business to James, who is now sole owner of Carstens Industries, Inc.   jim@carstensindustries.com

Carstens Industries currently operates out of a 20,000 square foot manufacturing facility and has a 15,000 square foot warehouse.  Our employees include an office manager and 15 full time production workers.  The majority of our employees have been with the company for 9-18 years.

Fiberglass lay-up is the basic reinforced plastic molding process.  The mold surface is treated with a release agent that will facilitate removal of the finished part.

Layers of reinforcement and resin are added to build the laminate to desired thickness. Lay-up is suited to making large structures requiring high strengths.

Fiberglass spray-up is a mechanized version of lay-up. A spray gun simultaneously sprays resin and chops continuous glass stands into specific length fibers. Chopped fibers enter the resin spray stream, and the polymer composition is generally used to back up a gel coat.
